image Garth Hardin is an expert at ‘Adaptability’. It’s his top ‘Strength’. It’s NOT mine.

Mine is ‘Achiever’.

So?

I’m sitting with Angelina in a Starbucks between Dallas and Houston Texas, within a few miles and date as our planned 2011 5k3c Expedition route.

Central Wyoming We chose to delay the cycling expedition for a bunch of reasons, mostly resulting from unwanted outcomes and unplanned changes, all of which were quite upsetting for me, and painfully endured by Angelina and those closest to me.

You can read a few posts back for some of the story.

Instead of cycling, we’re driving and camping much of the planned route. We’ve experienced the same great outdoors, albeit ten times faster than cycling – while trying to create the same results we had for the Expedition.

Breckenridge, CO Central Texas

Our plan was to cycle across America expressly to launch the Enterprising Cycle & DVD and initiate small groups for this fall. You might look into the archives to see that a year ago we tried to launch the MENtrepreneurs small groups by finding Facilitators. We learned that ‘Facilitators’ are NOT ‘marketers’. We found a great bunch of guys, but didn’t fill up any groups because I had a blind-spot. I assumed my ‘NORMAL’ was normal.

And this is the point of the post.

Blind-spots are just that. Blinding. They prevent us from seeing danger coming at us. Fortunately we can look around at the damage in the wake of an event, and recognize the ‘source’ of the trauma by spotting the inverse of any of our ‘Strengths’.

My top ‘Strength’ - ‘ACHIEVER’ means I take far less time than most everyone else to get stuff done. The inverse to this is that I expect everyone else to move along MUCH FASTER than they actually do.

Garth? I bet his ‘NORMAL’ – the ‘Adaptability’ he has learned, even perfected, is so closely held, that he can’t see how fabulous he is at it. He’s recovered from his torn ACL, and back out cycling already. He’s filling the ‘available’ time he has with adventure and work, as if the Expedition postponement wasn’t a big deal. He hasn’t complained or wined like I have. I had expectations. He ‘flows’.

Think about your ‘Strengths’ for a moment. Better, consider the ‘inverse’ of your top 3. How do you ‘offend’ others with a blindness about how ‘NORMAL’ your strengths are, or how much you expect others to be like your ‘NORMAL’? Do you beat yourself up, experience chronic stress on the ‘flip-side’ of your ‘Strength’?

BIG CLUE!

Psychological scotomas are just that – they’re personality disorders we consider ‘NORMAL’. Our limiting beliefs, attitudes and behaviors are right in front of us. We’ve spent over 10,000 perfecting them. They’re our ‘coping’ skills. They’re highlighted by the Clifton ‘Strengths’ Assessment.

We don’t see our blind-spots directly, even though they’re right ‘in our face’. To us, our ‘STRENGTHS’ are ‘NORMAL’, and the standard we set for our daily satisfaction. Some of us get paid for our ‘Strengths.’

Unfortunately they’re also the vehicle by which we wound those around us – because we judge others by our ‘NORMAL’ – which is FAR FROM THE TRUTH.

For more on this, go through chapters one and two of the Enterprising Cycle. Learn for yourself!

(my second and third degree blind-spots are INPUT and LEARNER)

OK, time to hit the road again!

Angelina? Let’s GO! I have to ACHIEVE much more today!!

Sounds to me...and looks to me as if you've adapted beautifully. With all the curve balls that came flying at you two at the last week prior to D day and after, from out of the blue, the fact that you two are presently where you are-doing what you are doing-is a clear testament to tenacity, adaptability and achievement!!

Pat yourselves on the back...at the very least. Here in the hood, warm weather has finally arrived. Business is way down all across the board with kite/windsurf companies. HRWP is doing a fraction of the business it did last year and it was half the business of the year prior. As the economy slows, luxury items become chafe in the wind...windsurf lessons, expensive but nutrient dense juices, expedition trips on bike-kayak-foot and what ever else, most aren't surprised. But taking advantage of the opportunities that are in front of me is at the least, a good thing. I simply took the momentum we gained leading up to the initial departure date and let it carry me into what was in front of me. So it wasn't The Tetons, tornado alley or the Smokeys. If I have any cognizance of my surroundings and the state of the majority of the rest of worlds existence, I will happily accept unexpected change.

Even in live fire exercises, as an artillery infantryman, we would often have to completely shift gears in our plans of execution, due to unexpected 'enemy' movement or weather or equipment loss and malfunction or supply line delays or all of the above..at once. Gearing up for the expedition physically and mentally has lead to nothing but good even though we never left. Funny how, in the midst of what we perceive as failure, debacle or something synonymous, doors close that need to be and other doors unexpectedly open...leading to something even better.

Easier said than done, but life is more what we do with what happens to us than the 'what happens to us' part.

You have taught me to be far more 'adaptable' and to hammer situations as an 'achiever' far less. Thanks for being so teachable and for YOUR leadership!

Thought I would check in to find out what's happening. The bike ride across America was a great plan! You had the whole thing planned just like an Army General plans an attack.. Regardless of how much planning goes into an attack things happen. As you put it "we chose to delay the cycling expedition for a bunch of reasons, mostly resulting from unwanted outcomes and unplanned changes," Just ask the General and everyone in his/her command the battle didn't happen the way things were planned. So what if your planned changes because of some significant tactical circumstances. I know you and Angelina are making a differences in following your passions! So put your picture of the distorted normal back in focus and make Mentrepreneurs rock!! Your Friend, Merlin

So, as I just now got to reading this, seeing the repeated head and neck injuries of my past seemingly caught up to me several weeks ago but are presently in remission..sort of, I had this immediate thought even before I finished reading your post Merlin: WWII...D-day, west coast France on the English channel... it was postponed because of weather. They had no choice...but the assault happened...and our primary language is english...still. Thank God. I'm spastic enough. I try to envision myself bouncing around like I do alot..all the while communicating in an amazingly staccato language. People woulda thought I was a mental ward escapee suffering from turrets syndrome and dyslexia.
